I have the exact same thing. My guess is that Gaben is going to implement some kind of micro transaction system which will raise more money than just selling a game. So they are hoping that people will recommend and give it to their friends. Their friends will play for a bit and that's when Gaben strikes: ingame store!
I bet the people who actually bought the game feel screwed over now. Then again, I'd feel screwed over anyway if I bought a shitty game like Dota :>
Dota is an RTS that focuses on a hero. You already have a fully built base with an important tower that your enemy wants to destroy. Soldiers are automatically spawned, and automatically attack, so the only thing that decides who's going to win is how you deploy your hero, and which upgrades you select. This is different from Age of Empires or Command & Conquer where it's about choosing what buildings to get, where to place them, and which type of soldier you build. I must say I don't like Dota's gameplay. Some people do (like the guitarist in J0ttem's band), maybe you're one of them, I'll send you a copy.
